Spotify's catalogue is usually described as 100 million tracks, which undersells what the app has become. The 2026 numbers are 100 million songs, more than 7 million podcast titles and roughly 700,000 audiobooks in the markets where the books catalogue is live. All three sit in the same library, under the same play button, with the same queue.
How the podcast side is organised
Podcasts are split into audio and video. Video podcasts play in a window inside the app, keep playing in Picture-in-Picture on iOS and Android, and can be cast to a television. Music videos, a separate feature launched in 2025, sit in their own row and are a different format entirely: short-form, artist-led, not full-length.
Discovery runs through three surfaces: editorial collections, the algorithm's recommendations, and search. The algorithm is unusually good at spoken word because it uses completion rate rather than skip rate as the signal — a show you finish at 1.5x outranks one you sample and abandon, which is why the recommendations skew toward long-form interview shows once you have listened to a few.
Playback speed runs from 0.5x to 3.5x, silence trimming can be turned on to skip dead air, and sleep timers are per-show rather than global. These three settings do more for podcast listening than any subscription tier.
How the audiobook allowance works
Premium Individual includes 15 hours of audiobook listening a month from the included catalogue. Duo and Family plans also include 15 hours, but the hours belong to the plan manager, not to each member, which is the most common surprise on a Family plan.
Unused hours do not roll over. Once the 15 hours are gone, you can buy additional 10-hour top-ups, and the standalone Audiobooks Access plan at $9.99 offers the same 15 hours while leaving music on the ad-supported tier. Free listeners get public-domain recordings only — a real catalogue, but a small slice of the 700,000 titles.
Progress syncs across devices, bookmarks are per account, and downloads work offline within the same five-device limit as music. Speeding an audiobook to 1.5x does not reduce the hours counted; the allowance is measured against the book's runtime, not your listening time.
Why the catalogue differs by country
Music licensing is global enough that nearly everything is available everywhere Spotify operates, but podcasts and audiobooks are licensed territory by territory. A show can be exclusive to one market because a publisher sold it that way, and an audiobook may exist in the US catalogue and not in India.
This is why a recommendation sometimes opens as unavailable after you travel. The app does not hide those titles; they simply fail the rights check at playback. There is no workaround short of a local account, and using one from outside the country breaches the terms.
Exclusives and what they mean for you
Spotify still holds exclusive and windowed deals, mostly on video podcasts and a handful of high-profile shows. Exclusivity has cooled since the 2020 to 2022 peak, when the company spent heavily on talent, but it has not disappeared. In practice a show that used to be everywhere may now publish its video version on Spotify first and its audio feed a week later.
For listeners the trade-off is simple: if a show you follow has gone exclusive, the Spotify app is the only complete version, and the free tier plays it with ads just as Premium does.
Host-read and publisher-inserted ads are part of the audio file. Premium removes Spotify's own music advertising, not the commercials inside a show. Only Spotify's exclusive shows, which use dynamically inserted ads, lose their ad breaks for subscribers.
Practically: how to use the spoken-word side
- Separate your home screen. Follow shows rather than saving episodes; the home screen then splits music and spoken word into two rows instead of mixing them.
- Use the podcast filter in Your Library. It is the only way to find a show you followed two years ago in a library of 4,000 liked songs.
- Download episodes, not shows. Auto-download of a daily news show will fill a phone with a week of stale episodes.
- Check the audiobook hours before a long drive. Fifteen hours is one long book; a 40-hour history will need a top-up.
If you mainly listen to spoken word, the maths changes: podcast downloads work on the free tier, so the only reason to pay is the audiobook hours and ad-free music. Our free tier guide and plan comparison both cover where that line falls.
