Spotify ships a native app for Windows, macOS, Android, iOS, iPadOS, Android TV, Fire TV, Samsung Tizen, LG webOS, Apple TV, PlayStation, Xbox and a handful of smartwatches. All of them are free to install, all of them play the ad-supported tier without a card, and all of them use the same account. What changes is the feature set at the edges: offline downloads, lossless audio and Connect behaviour differ by platform.
Where to get each Spotify app
| Platform | Source | Approx. size | Minimum version |
|---|---|---|---|
| Windows | spotify.com/download or Microsoft Store | 90 MB | Windows 10 (64-bit) |
| macOS | spotify.com/download | 200 MB | macOS 12 Monterey |
| Android | Google Play | 30 MB | Android 7.0 |
| iPhone / iPad | App Store | 250 MB | iOS 15.0 |
| Smart TV | TV app store | 25 MB | Tizen 2018 / webOS 4.0 |
| Web player | open.spotify.com | None | Modern browser |
Version numbers move every few weeks, so treat the build in the store listing as authoritative rather than anything quoted on a third-party page. What does not change is the source: the desktop installer comes from spotify.com, mobile builds from Google Play or the App Store. There is no legitimate "Spotify Premium APK" that unlocks paid features, and the ones that circulate either do nothing or carry malware.
Installing on Windows or macOS
Download the installer, run it, and sign in. On Windows the Microsoft Store version updates itself in the background; the standalone installer from spotify.com also self-updates but keeps its own copy in %APPDATA%\Spotify. On macOS, drag the app to Applications, then allow it in Privacy and Security if Gatekeeper blocks the first launch.
Desktop is the only place where local files work: Settings, then Local Files, then point Spotify at a folder of your own MP3s or FLACs. They appear in the library alongside streamed tracks and can be added to playlists, though they will not sync to other devices unless those devices can also see the files.
Installing on Android
Install from Google Play, open the app, and sign in. Android is the most flexible platform for Spotify: it supports offline downloads, lossless audio over a capable DAC or Bluetooth codec, Android Auto, home-screen widgets and the Spotify Connect target for other devices. If you sideload rather than use Play, expect to allow installs from your browser and expect no automatic updates.
Battery optimisation is the usual culprit when downloads stall in the background. Set Spotify to unrestricted under battery settings, or keep the app open until the queue finishes.
Installing on iPhone and iPad
Install from the App Store and sign in. Two iOS-specific notes: subscriptions bought inside the app are billed by Apple at a small markup, so the web is usually cheaper; and AirPlay 2 and Picture-in-Picture both work, including for video podcasts.
iOS does not allow Spotify to download in the background indefinitely. If a large playlist is queued, leave the app in the foreground with the screen on until it completes.
Television, console and car
On a smart television, install from the TV's own store and sign in with a device code: the screen shows a short code and a web address, you enter the code on your phone, and the television authenticates itself. The same pattern applies on PlayStation and Xbox. In a car, CarPlay and Android Auto run the phone app rather than a separate client, so whatever is downloaded on the phone is what plays when the signal drops.
Televisions and consoles stream only. No downloads, and on most of them no lossless, which is a platform limit rather than a subscription one.
After the install: three settings worth changing
- Audio quality. Set streaming to Very High, or Lossless if your headphones or speakers can resolve it. The default is deliberately conservative to protect data.
- Download quality. Match it to your storage: Very High at roughly 8 MB a track fills a 64 GB phone quickly.
- Offline Backup. Turn it on and Spotify keeps a rolling cache of recent listening, so a dead zone does not mean silence even when you forgot to download.
No card is needed to install or to listen. Offline music downloads require Premium, but podcast downloads are available on the free tier, and the whole catalogue streams with ads at 160 kbps. Our free tier breakdown covers exactly what you lose by not paying.
If the install fails
On Windows, a stalled installer is nearly always a leftover process: end every Spotify task in Task Manager, then run the installer again. On macOS, an "app is damaged" message usually means a quarantined download, fixed by removing the quarantine attribute or reinstalling from spotify.com. On Android, a "device not compatible" error in Play is usually an outdated Android version or a region restriction on the listing.
