What is Spotify

Spotify is the world's largest audio streaming platform

Spotify is a music, podcast and audiobook service operated by Spotify Technology S.A., founded in Stockholm in 2006 by Daniel Ek and Martin Lorentzon and launched publicly in 2008. It has been listed on the New York Stock Exchange as SPOT since a direct listing in 2018, and it is headquartered in Stockholm with major offices in New York and London.

The second-quarter 2026 results put the service at 777 million monthly active users, including 300 million paying subscribers, across 184 markets. The catalogue holds more than 100 million music tracks, 7 million podcast titles and roughly 700,000 audiobooks, all reachable from the same search box and the same play button.

Everything on this site is about that one product: how to download Spotify on any device, how the Spotify web player and login work in a browser, what Spotify Premium costs in 2026, how to switch on Spotify lossless audio, and how offline downloads count against your device limit.

Core features

Music, spoken word and lossless audio in one library

Four things that keep Spotify ahead of every other streaming service on breadth.

100 million tracks

The whole recorded catalogue, from major-label releases to independent uploads, with Discover Weekly, Release Radar, daylist and the AI DJ building queues from what you actually finish.

7 million podcasts

Audio and video shows, with speed control up to 3.5x, silence trimming, per-show sleep timers and downloads that work even on the free tier.

24-bit FLAC included

24-bit / 44.1 kHz FLAC inside every Premium plan since September 2025, not a separate HiFi tier. Roughly 1,411 kbps against 320 kbps at Very High.

2,000+ devices

Phones, desktops, televisions, consoles, watches and cars, with Spotify Connect and Jam moving playback between them without dropping the queue.

Why Spotify

A free tier that stands on its own

Six reasons the service works whether you pay or not.

On-demand, without paying

Since September 2025 free listeners can play any song in any order, not just shuffle an artist. Ads remain; the shuffle lock is gone.

Lossless included

No Platinum upsell. Every Premium plan reaches 24-bit FLAC, which is the simplest audio-quality story of any major service.

Offline on five devices

10,000 tracks per device, plus Offline Backup quietly caching recent listening so a dead zone does not mean silence.

184 markets

Local pricing almost everywhere, with the same catalogue and the same features rather than a cut-down regional build.

Playlists people actually use

Discover Weekly, Blend, Jam and the year-end Wrapped turned recommendation into a social feature rather than a settings menu.

Family at $3.67 each

Six accounts for $21.99, each with its own recommendations, plus Spotify Kids and explicit-content controls for the plan manager.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

The eight questions new Spotify listeners ask most often.

Spotify is a music, podcast and audiobook streaming service operated by Spotify Technology S.A., founded in Stockholm in 2006 and launched publicly in 2008. Its second-quarter 2026 results reported 777 million monthly active users, including 300 million Premium subscribers, across 184 markets, with a catalogue of more than 100 million tracks, 7 million podcast titles and roughly 700,000 audiobooks.

Yes. The ad-supported tier costs nothing and requires no card. Since September 2025 it also allows on-demand playback of any song in any order, so it is a real service rather than a shuffle demo. Free caps audio at 160 kbps and does not allow music downloads or lossless.

After the 15 January 2026 increase, Premium Individual is $12.99, Duo $18.99, Family $21.99 and Student $6.99 per month in the United States. Audiobooks Access is $9.99. All four music plans include lossless audio, offline downloads and 15 audiobook hours; the difference is how many accounts you get.

Go to open.spotify.com and choose Log in, then use email, Google, Apple, Facebook or a phone number. Only open.spotify.com and accounts.spotify.com are genuine Spotify login pages. If a link asks you to confirm a password by email, close it: Spotify never does that.

Windows, macOS, Android, iOS and iPadOS, Android TV, Fire TV, Samsung Tizen, LG webOS, Apple TV, PlayStation, Xbox, CarPlay, Android Auto, Wear OS, watchOS and any modern browser. Spotify lists more than 2,000 compatible devices, with Spotify Connect and Jam moving playback between them.

Yes. Lossless arrived in September 2025 for every Premium plan at no extra cost: FLAC up to 24-bit / 44.1 kHz, roughly 1,411 kbps. It works in the desktop and mobile apps only. The web player streams AAC at 256 kbps on Premium and has no quality setting, and Bluetooth codecs compress the stream before it reaches your headphones.

With Premium, yes: up to 10,000 tracks per device on five devices, at anything from Low to lossless. Podcast episodes can be downloaded on the free tier as well. Downloads need an internet connection roughly every 30 days to renew their licence, and they stop working if a title leaves the catalogue.

The desktop installer comes from spotify.com/download, Android from Google Play, and iPhone and iPad from the App Store. There is no legitimate modified build that unlocks Premium features; sites offering a Spotify Premium APK are distributing either nothing useful or malware.

Start listening free. Upgrade only for lossless.

Install Spotify, play the whole catalogue with ads, and add Premium when you want offline downloads, 24-bit audio or no interruptions.
